In the middle of the night, my friend, Hon. Nabilah Naggayi Ssempala, uploaded a video to her Facebook, with the caption “I am being hounded out” – soon after that – it became apparent that she had been seized and detained in what appears clearly to be a violent unlawful arrest and taken to an unknown place by Museveni forces. I am disturbed and worried:
Hon. Nabilah is a member of the Ugandan Parliament and candidate for Lord Mayor of Kampala, under the same party affiliation as Hon. Robert KYAGULANYI, Bobi Wine, NUP, outspoken in her opposition of Museveni. Bobi Wine is running against Museveni – the dictator who has held office for 30 years, and Hon. Nabilah supports Bobi Wine.
Hon. Nabilah is still detained and I believe is being subjected to serious mistreatment.
It is unclear what charges, if any, against her.
From my own observation all she may be construed guilty of, in the eyes of the oppressive Museveni dictatorship, is speaking openly to promote the principles of democracy, freedom and fair elections, and her hopes for the future of Kampala under her leadership.
For 30 years, Museveni has been known to use his police, military security forces and secret police in disappearances, arbitrary arrests – to detain and terrify opposition to his government, through torture and intimidation tactics.
I am posting the feed from Hon. Nabilah’s Facebook page here, which in its chronology tells a story of courage, attempts at democracy and then oppressively brutal suppression on the part of the Museveni forces. #FreeNabilah
Meeting with Hon. Nabilah over a year ago in San Francisco and hearing about her political campaign for Lord Mayor and joining her in celebrating the accomplishments and candidacy of Bobi Wine for President:
Hon Nabilah Naggayi Sempala, a politician, a member of Parliament, representing the seat for the women of Kampala, an educator, a proponent of democracy, human rights and deeply patriotic Ugandan, a devout Muslim, a wife, a mom, starts her campaign for Lord Mayor of Kampala, under theNational Unity Platform, the same Party affiliation as Bobi Wine for President who is opposing 30 year dictator, Yoweri Museveni.
Hon. Nabilah traverses Uganda with Bobi Wine in his campaign to excite people about the possibilities of a free and fair election and change in Uganda. Several before Wine have attempted to campaign and stand in opposition to Museveni in a democratic way, yet each and every opponent over the past decades, have suffered unlawful arrests and detentions and beatings and never managed to rise out of the ashes of violently crushed campaigns. This did not deter Bobi wine , nor Hon. Nabilah. Acutely aware of the risks, they courageously pursued the dream for the People Power.
My gallant voters in the city, am reminding you of the power you have…Whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness it is the right of the people to alter or abolish it, and to institute new government…I call upon the government to disavow the statements made by the military to ensure that elections are free and fair…
Along the way a loss of her friend Dr. Sheikh Anas Kaliisa
THE CAMPAIGN Continues with fanfare and excitement, posters across the districts hail hope for change, a side by side Hon. Bobi Wine and Hon Naggayi Nabilah:
Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are elected to the US Presidency and Hon Nabilah is excited at the hope for renewed American standing on globalHuman Rights and the proof that a Democratic process can be enjoyed by a country where autocracy and cruelty and failed values is exhibited:
Hon. Nabilah forges ahead with her campaigning, her rally cry to those who may feel suppressed – and her call – perhaps an ominous reminder to self- of the risks she knew she was taking – detention – yet her willingness to shirk a fear that may otherwise have prevented her historic quest for political change: “The only real Prison is fear, and the only real freedom is freedom from fear……” as once noted by former political prisoner Nobel Peace Prize and winner Aung San Suu Kyi
And so the campaign moves forward and gains more and more followers and attention. I am told 78 % of the populace actually supports Bobi Wine for President. This is anecdotal and not official polled data – and if near truth, certainly would be a wake up call for Museveni. Unfortunately a wake up call to a dictator will result in arbitrary rests, detentions and the obvious violence that goes hand in hand with what is perceived as an upsizing rather than a free and fair dmeocratic election:
And soon begin the arrests – the expected intimidation and oppression.
Lina Zedriga arrested.
Her story too…Dr. Lina Zedriga Waru Abuku @linazed2 was the Secretary of Uganda’s National Committee for the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, War Crimes, Crimes ….. and now is the Director of Women Peace and Security at Regional Associates for Community Initiatives (RACI). As the Deputy President in charge of Northern Uganda Dr. Lina Zedriga Waru, was campaigning in Oyam District on Thursday, 12 November 2020 for the Bobi Wine Kyagulanyi NUP Party. According to Bobi Wine, Dr Zedriga was arrested and locked in a cell of male inmates at Lolo police station.
The Arrest of Madam Zedriga see HERE Hon. Nabilah wins in the chorus calling for Dr. Zedriga’s release.
Along the Campaign route, the crowds gather and increase- popularity abundant- encouraged, people are spreading the news and joining the excitement for NUP candidates.
And Hon Nabilah Naggayi Sempala continues to reflect and speak out against the Museveni dictatorship on social media.
AND then the Security Forces and Police start with the roadblocks to try and prevent campaign movement through Uganda. This is suppression of democracy in pictorial!!!
Yet the Campaign continues despite roadblocks – and attempts to thwart free movement. At this point there is no reason to block people’s way- all it is attempting to do is to block PEOPLE POWER!
The threatening security and police – ever present to intimidate
The bravery and hope for People Power attracts large crowds
AND THEN COMES THE ARREST OF candidate for Presidency – Robert Kyagulanyo – aka Bobi Wine. He is much too popular – and Museveni can see it – it is time to take him and his supporters down –
Bobi Wine is arrested – yet again as has been the case so many times in the past – long before COVID-19 was the excuse: READ MORE HERE
Hon. Nabilah attends in the hope of freeing her fellow NUP campaigner, and so pursues the arrest – going to the place where Bobi Wine is held, together with NUP Counsel in the hope of his release.
SOON thereafter she pays the price – She was arrested in the a violent night raid at her home. Nabilah recorded the raid. The Video cut off as they physically and violently grabbed her. I will soon upload the Video recording –
The Edge: Security Thursday night raided the home of Hon Nabilah Naggayi and arrested her. “In the dead of the night, Hon. Nabilah Naggayi Ssempala was violently arrested with several other comrades,” her social media administrator said. “As we demand for the release of Hon. Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert, we condemn the targeting of our other leaders and demand that they too get their freedom!”
THE RAID NOV 19 – 2020 – Candidate for Lord Mayor and Member of Ugandan Parliament – Hon. Nabilah Naggayi Sempala is arrested:
The Last word on Honorable Nabilah’s Social media, and one can only read in to it:
There’s a lot of things that need to change. One specifically? Police brutality. There are so many things going on in this country that are unbelievable. A lot of gun violence and police brutality.
We run into police brutality often and it’s always a problem that we always have to protest and speak out.I am depressed rather at the wave of brutality sweeping over the country. When you have police officers who abuse citizens, you erode public confidence in law enforcement. That makes the job of good police officers unsafeThis should end!!We can’t keep the country at the edges….This is our home..As our president always say…they can break our borns but will never touch our souls….
No retreat! No surrender! No amount of intimation, torture, harassment and atrocity will stop change, revolution and liberation who’s time has come.
African Human rights Coalition will be issuing a statement. In the meantime I pray for my courageous friends and all in Uganda, for President to be Hon. Kyagulanyi Ssentamu Robert, for Hon Sempala Naggayi Nabilah – may freedom prevail.
I have made contact with Hon. Nabilah – more to come….
Speak out! PEOPLE’S POWER!
