Theater on the Cusp presents “Love & Pride” – a new musical that turns the conversation on gender, sex, and sexuality on its head – Support Queer Theatre- See discount code below!
San Francisco, CA – Theater on the Cusp presents Love & Pride at the EXIT Theatre for an 8-show run. This will be the 4th production in 2 years. All of the previous productions had sold-out shows, and have been well received by the LGBTQIA+, academic and theater communities.
Love & Pride features six characters who identify at different points along the spectrums of gender, sex and sexuality, and the conflicts that arise within themselves and with their relationships, due to those identities. With so little representation outside of heteronormativity in theater, Love & Pride fearlessly brings characters to the stage that identify as intersex, trans, bisexual, polyamorous, a gender, gender-fluid, asexual and more – and in a way that is authentic, respectful, charismatic, and thought-provoking. Go see it!
Written, composed, directed and choreographed by San Francisco native and rock-musician-turned-theater producer Syren, the musical and dance numbers span the genres of pop, rock jazz and electronic music.
Love & Pride is also an homage to the playwright’s hometown, as we watch each character transition, come out, fight, laugh and fall in love against the backdrop of iconic San Francisco events, from Pride to Outside Lands to the Folsom Street Fair.
Syren’s unorthodox creative process is unparalleled, and she based all of the dialogue and songs on research and interviews she conducted with queer and non-conforming folks, and the production proudly stars a stellar cast of local queer and gender non-conforming performers.
The Motivation: The topics of gender and sexuality have seen significant shifts in mainstream U.S. culture in the last few years, and in unprecedented ways. To name a few: the Supreme Court ruled in favor of same-sex marriage nationwide, television shows featuring transgender characters, such as Orange is the New Black and Transparent were among the highest rated, and the LGBT acronym continued to expand to LGBPTTQQIIAA+. While this undoubtedly signifies progress towards inclusiveness and equality for those who identify and/or are marked as queer, there are still many misconceptions about gender, sex and sexuality. There are still many people who do not understand the differences between gender and sex. The diverse communities within each category are often imagined as a homogenous group, and continue to be viewed within the rigid binaries of male/female and gay/straight. More pressing is that inequality, prejudice, and violence against transgender and nonconforming individuals are still prevalent in the U.S.
