First off – Happy Cinco de Mayo! I saw a headline just now – “Gingrich: LGBT rights fight ‘one sided’ because Catholics are oppressed too”. Oh, really. Wonder what in Heaven’s name Newt is whining about now?
Then I saw this quote:
“But what I’m struck with is the one-sidedness of the desire for rights,” Gingrich continued. “There are no rights for Catholics to have adoption services in Massachusetts, they’re outlawed. There are no rights in D.C. for Catholics to have adoption services, they’re outlawed.”
Excuse me? ‘Outlawed’? Adoption services are not outlawed in Massachusetts and D.C. for Catholic Charities. They are not offered because the Catholic Church voluntarily pulled the rug out halting those services. Why? Because they REFUSE to allow the gay community adoption rights. How is that ‘outlawed’? I believe they did the same thing in Illinois which has yet to even grant same-gender marriage rights.
Ostensibly Newt was on Meet The Press to discuss the Jason Collins coming out story, but used the opportunity to discuss the oppression of his Catholic Church. After the mis-characterized ‘outlawed’ adoption claim, he went on to question that to accept people as gay means we “have to affirmatively eliminate any institution which does not automatically accept that?”
We all know Newt is only Catholic, having converted in 2009, so he could marry his THIRD wife. But did he annul his previous TWO marriages? A convenient way around the dicta? Those same Catholics who refuse to allow same-gender couples to adopt, also don’t allow divorce any number of times. And both of those first two wives he cheated on with the ‘next-wife-in-waiting’ which I also don’t believe those same Catholics allow.
And around these parts (New England), the ever-loving Catholic Church, through its Providence Bishop, has now ‘spoken’ on the diocese website telling good Catholics that they cannot attend any of those shiny new same-gender marriages come August 1st without risk of scandal:
“And because “same-sex marriages” are clearly contrary to God’s plan for the human family, and therefore objectively sinful, Catholics should examine their consciences very carefully before deciding whether or not to endorse same-sex relationships or attend same-sex ceremonies, realizing that to do so might harm their relationship with God and cause significant scandal to others.”
How is this all one-sided? How exactly is the Catholic Church being oppressed? I won’t worry too much for him because who knows what religion Newt will be once Wife #4 comes along…
Watch at the clip at NBC here:
“No GOP presidential hopeful has come under more scrutiny for his marital history than Newt Gingrich. For almost three decades, the thrice-married former speaker of the House has fielded questions about his split from first wife, Jackie Battley — namely, that he’d served her divorce papers while she was in the hospital undergoing cancer treatment (a story that Gingrich and his daughters have vigorously denied.) But in January, Gingrich was forced to respond to another personal allegation when second wife Marianne Gingrich appeared on ABC News and accused him of asking her for an open marriage in 1999 in order to be with Callista Bisek — the woman who is now his third wife.” So he asked her if he could commit adultery?
