On Giving Tuesday AHRC Prepares for the Anti- LGBTQI+ Refugee Trump Admin

Giving Tuesday is the day the world comes together to show it cares. Our fellow NGO’s participate in so many creative ways to bring attention to the important and challenging work we are all doing, to tell stories and express needs. You will be receiving many an email in these days. Your contributions are life-saving and we all rely on your generosity.

African Human Rights Coalition (AHRC) is a small organization doing big work. It is the only organization in the world solely dedicated to providing LGBTQI+ people in and from African countries with humanitarian, advocacy and legal services, throughout the forced displacement cycle. Our volunteers include AHRC’s dedicated ambassadors, refugees and LGBTQI+ activists, all with lived experience, doing the hard work on the ground.

Your donation goes directly to programs in South Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Zambia, Malawi, Burundi, DRC, Ghana and Zimbabwe :

  • Shelter
  • Food in refugee camps and transit centers
  • Medical emergencies, eyesight tests and glasses, emergency dentistry
  • Relocation emergencies
  • Post prison/detention transition shelter/services under anti-Homosexuality criminalization
  • Holiday meal programs
  • Providing food to detainees

SEVERAL GROUPS RELY ON AHRC FOR ALL THEIR FOOD By year’s end there will be more than 120 million refugees worldwide. The refugee crisis is a food crisis. The global refugee crisis cannot be solved without addressing hunger. LGBTQI+ communities are often the most vulnerable to food insecurity and have the fewest resources.

For some LGBTQI+ refugees, AHRC is their only source of food, and for others we provide a supplemental food to the meagre ration of one sorghum meal per day which often runs out mid-month.

Currently we are providing special rations and insulin for several LGBTQI+ diabetics.

We also provide for several children in the groups. We try to provide nutritious food and this has become more expensive over the past year.

THE NEED IS GROWING

We have a need in several countries where we have not been able to provide emergency services, including DRC, Rwanda, Tanzania and Cameroon.

Our greatest need is to keep the current food programs going and to extend the food programs to newcomers.

WE NEED MORE TRANSITION SHELTERS
When LGBTQI+ people flee, most often, the only sources of protection as refugees are hostile host countries, where they are also criminalized and viewed as abhorrent and Satanic. The only difference between the home and host country is the fact that the latter is subject to international refugee treatise with UNHCR mandates.

LGBTQI+ person require special safe housing when they are seeking solutions after violent attacks or arrests in their home countries, in protection environments where they face further hostility and while they await the hope of resettlement which can take many years through extreme vetting process.

As you can see the task at hand is endless and fraught with challenges.

Many thanks to all our donors and supporters and for considering African Human Rights Coalition on this Giving Tuesday, 2024.
