By Melanie Nathan, October 29, 2024
ILGA WORLD issued the below statement refusing the Israeli member organization, The Aguda the right to submit Tel Aviv as a host city for a vote for the World Conference 2026-2027. In doing this, ILGA also decided to suspend the member organization. African Human Rights Coalition (AHRC) is the first organization to condemn this decision and to resign its membership to ILGA in solidarity with the Aguda. The statement is HERE. For transparency I also direct AHRC.

Welcome to ILGA unless you are a JEWISH organization
THIS IS THE ILGA ANOUNCEMENT:
Dear member organisations,
As ILGA World, we continue to work closely with the local host organisations, Gender DynamiX and Iranti, in welcoming the world to Cape Town, South Africa for the 31st ILGA World Conference. We recognise that each moment and context in which the Conference is hosted is different. Therefore, we recognise that we carry the responsibility to be more politically aware to meaningfully hold and respond to global, regional and local realities.
Over recent days we have heard and understood the significant and legitimate disconcert regarding a member organisation bidding to host the World Conference in Tel Aviv, Israel in 2026 or 2027.
In response to these multiple concerns, the ILGA World Board held an emergency meeting and unanimously decided to remove the bid from The Aguda from consideration. The decision was taken to ensure we fully uphold universal respect for human rights, equal representation, and the elimination of barriers to participation for all members – including in our conferences.
The bid to host our next World Conference in Tel Aviv will not go forward and will not be put to a vote at the upcoming World Conference in Cape Town, South Africa, as it was found in violation of ILGA World’s aims and objectives set out in our Constitution (3.1 and 3.2). The ILGA World Board is also reviewing The Aguda’s compliance with our Constitution and has decided to suspend the organisation from our membership to allow for that to happen.
ILGA World apologises. We know that seeing the Tel Aviv bid taken into consideration caused anger and harm to our communities. Our apology goes to our members, to our host organisations and our global communities — and especially to those in South Africa, who will soon host the global movement for our upcoming World Conference. We recognise the historical experience with apartheid and colonialism in South Africa: even the possibility of voting on such a bid in their home country would have been at odds with the unequivocal solidarity for the Palestinian people.
We heard our communities, and we must do better in the future: a situation like this must not repeat. This is why we call our global membership to action: we need stronger governance practices in vetting the proposals we receive. Therefore, the ILGA World Board supports the operative part in the emergency motion from our member organisations, which calls for an amendment of the Standing Orders to have better guidelines on the criteria for accepting candidacies and proposals.
We also understand concerns about inclusion and participation raised by LGBTI activists in Cape Town based on the high cost of registration. Over the past two years, ILGA, Gender DynamiX and Iranti has fundraised to ensure equitable access and participation at the Conference. This included fundraising to ensure language justice and the expansion of the scholarship programme to ensure that the Africa region is well represented. This also meant raising funds to support local scholarships for Cape Town-based activists. In addition to these steps already taken, the ILGA World Board has agreed to issue additional but limited daily passes for local activists. This will increase the opportunities for local participation, and for our global community to get to know the vital work done by activists in Cape Town. Both Gender DynamiX and Iranti remain engaged with local activists and collectives to identify opportunities that can benefit local queer activists and collectives in material ways.
We hope this will be a learning moment for our organisation. Only with improved governance processes, greater context and political awareness, and more participation will we be able to serve our communities even better.
Given this statement, ILGA World went full antisemitic while nurturing homophobia, xenophobia, and many more human rights infractions, turning their back on the very mission for which they stand! ILGA WORLD took a hypocritical position on the Tel Aviv bid for the 2026/2027 World Conference, and worse it suspended the only openly Jewish identified organization among its members. ILGA World stands for The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex Association. (Scroll down to see the antisemitic statement)
Why is the below decision and communication so clearly antisemitic? I do not see expulsions from any other countries where the Governments have abhorrent human rights and homophobic records. One of many an example is South Africa. While South Africa has an all inclusive constitution upholding LGBTQI+ rights it has a repugnantly high record of homophobic and xenophobic attacks against LGBTQI+ people. Its immigration and sanctuary record is inhumane and defies the most basic of its human rights obligations. Lesbians are subjected to corrective rape and brutal murder in the Townships and the ANC Government has done nothing but paid lip service to change. I am being cryptic and the list goes on.
I challenge ILGA to go though the list of member organizations and to apply its consideration to the administration of the countries they choose to ignore. Failing this, antisemitism is the only answer. I also ask ILGA – if Trump gets into office – and implements his PROJECT 2025 or attacks Mexico, are you going to BAN the USA members? That said ILGA has not banned Russia – which is committing horrific atrocities in Ukraine. Damn right its antisemitism. Then there is Afghanistan etc. etc.
Many of us Jews worldwide and in Israel and globally are opposed to the Netanyahu Government while still supporting Israel and its right to exist and defend itself against the quest for its extinction and the quest for Hamas Palestinians to exterminate all Jews. In defending itself against the promise by Palestinian Hamas to repeat the savage massacre of 1200 Jews October 07 “again and again and again” as well as the barbaric nature of hostage taking and captivity, Israel is held to account to ILGA while Sudan, Russia and a host of other countries are ignored.
The end of this war in Gaza, where ironically Palestinian terrorists would be the first slaughter gays, has been in the hands of Hamas for months and they refuse. They would rather continue their strategy of tactical civilian sacrifice, having publicly noted (via the now dead Sinwar) that they would rather martyr their children than surrender and return hostages for a cease fire! Who are the human rights monsters? While no government is perfect – only Israel and its LGBTQI+ member organization, The Aguda, which provides work inclusive to Palestinian, Muslim and Arab Lesbian, gay ,lesbian, bisexual and trans people, must be cancelled?
WHO IS THE AGUDA:
The Association for LGBTQ Equality in Israel is a human rights organization which focuses primarily on obtaining and fighting for equality. Our work reaches and is present in different aspects of society such as public, governmental and political arenas, media and social platforms, and more. Part of our mission is also to provide extensive assistance to LGBTQ individuals or groups in need. Our departments, clinics, staff and volunteers provide a range of professional services such as mental support, legal counseling, family mediation, assistance to refugees and immigrants, and assistance to any victim of discrimination or hatred on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Since The Aguda’s founding in 1975 as the first Israeli LGBTQ oriented human rights organization, the association has spearheaded large scale public struggles for the community, and has worked for social and legislative change for the LGBTQ community – both nationally and in communities across the country in local pride communities. The Aguda also works towards the eradication of LGBTQ-Phobia and promotes the general national status of the community. No matter what color of the rainbow you identify as – we are here for you.
I am a country conditions expert witness in the U.S. and Global Immigration tribunals, providing testimony under oath for why LGBTQI+ people from African Countries should receive asylum. I also direct The African Human Rights Coalition, a member organization of ILGA. Most our clients are Muslim. I am an expert on the country human rights infractions and homophobia causing the LGBTQI asylum seeker to be forcibly displaced, fleeing and seeking protection abroad. This is at the hands of the governments whose abuse of human rights, like those alleged about Israel have massive consequences beyond LGBTQI+ only related issues. The intersections also glare. Countries and organizations should not be subject to expulsion based on administrations and governments, unless applied equally to all. If you target Israel, you are antisemitic, especially at a time when it is defending its very existence.
Following this African Human Rights Coalition, named a member in the USA, has resigned from ILGA. Read its statement here. HERE
Not only is ILGA’s judgment resting on misinformation but on a worldwide hatred of Jews subscribing to a bias that has horrifically failed context. Lest we forget by sheer numbers 1200 barbarically murdered Jews (worldwide 15 million) equals 80,000 Muslims (worldwide is 1 billion). This number does not in any way serve to justify the loss of life in Gaza, and there ought to be no quid pro quo through killing, yet it does paint a picture about the extent of Israel’s loss. It does paint a picture that another 1200 dead again and again as threatened by Hamas is in fat 80,000 again and again, thereby justifying further Israel’s right to defend itself. The point of saying all this is to note ILGA’s attack on Israel simply conforms to worldwide hate of Israel.
As director of AHRC, we provided the following statement:
African Human Rights Coalition stands in solidarity with The Aguda. and hereby formally resigns as a U.S. based member of ILGA World. Our resignation is based on ILGA’S discriminatory treatment of the Israeli umbrella organization known as The Aguda and on ILGA’s discriminatory treatment of Israel.
We believe Israeli organizations and Israel’s quest to host the ILGA World Conference, should not be singled out, banned from the vote, cancelled, suspended or expelled based on the actions of the administration or government in that country, especially when no other country is taken to task in the same way. Punishing the Israeli LGBTQI+ community and its organizations is no way for ILGA to represent global LGBTQI+ interests.
If ILGA’S announcement and actions were not based on pure antisemitism ILGA would not be doing this or would apply the same measures to many other member organizations and countries, such as Russia, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Uganda, Sudan, Ghana, The Gambia and many more.African Human Rights Coalition was founded on the fusion of Jewish and African values of Tikun Olam, “welcome the stranger,” and Ubuntu. The organization provides advocacy and humanitarian services to predominantly LGBTQI+ Muslims, as well as Christians and others, who are forcibly displaced and fleeing violence licensed by criminalizing laws and stringent societal taboos.
We will not tolerate discrimination, antisemitism, islamophobia, racism, and the misappropriation and abuse of terms such as genocide and Apartheid.
Below is the list of African member countries to ILGA – almost all of whom have the most horrific human rights records and I do not see them being expelled from ILGA the way it has done The AGUDA from Israel.
