Nigerian Academics perpetuate Homophobic Violence under guise of Academia

By Melanie Nathan, September 26, 2024.

Academia.edu is a commercial platform for sharing academic research that is uploaded and distributed by researchers from around the world. All academic articles are free to read by visitors, however uploading and downloading articles is restricted to registered users, with additional features accessible only as a paid subscription. I have been using the platform for years for a small part of my research as a country conditions expert witness for LGBTQI+ asylum seekers from African countries.  During this time it has served some of my research, and has ironically has provided  proof that education institutions, professors, and scientific professionals continue to poison the academic well with religious dicta and bias that has no truth or factual basis in reality. This is dangerous and promotes violence against LGBTQI+ people in the countries that are covered and elsewhere. After writing to Academia. du they immediately pulled down the offending article noting such would not be tolerated by the platform.

Since the launch of the site in 2008, the number of users has grown rapidly, reaching about 10 million daily visits in early 2022. By 2024, Academia.edu has over 270 million registered users, with over 55 million papers currently available on the platform. In 2022, the company entered the scientific publishing sector, launching a dozen scientific, open access journals, and publishing under the name of Academia.edu Journals.  This managed to make it onto the platform, but is now taken down since I complained. I encourage anyone seeing similar to do the same.

Here is an example of an article by Kehinde Emmanuel Obasola, which is based on falsity, religious myth, and is overtly homophobic and hateful, while heralded as academic by virtue of its author’s credentials. The author actually boasts a Ph.D. The chosen content is biased and putrid in sentiment. This does not hold up to true academia and serves to promote false notions about homosexuality that have led to enhanced anti-Homosexuality legislation, where LGBTQI+ people face harsh prison terms across the continent which includes years in prison, to life in Prison, to the death penalty. These laws license persecution, a myriad of harms, and violence, often resulting in death. NO PLATFORM should carry such hate and people like this should be barred from participating in academic events abroad. Their institutions should also not be credentialed for recognition abroad.

And what the hell is homosexualism?

ABSTRACT
It is sad to note that the culture of homosexualism which is a form of sexual perversity has enveloped the world and it has become a canker worm eating into every fabric of society and leaving in its trail tales of woes as it has negatively impacted the lives of not only those involved in the act, but has brought about a negative image for the Church who is suppose to be a harbinger of hope for the world. Interestingly, the Church is enmeshed in series of contradicting controversies which has dented the image of the Church and as such, she is losing grip over the essential responsibility she has over the spiritual as well as the social lives of the people whom she is to cater for. Consequently, the issue of homosexuality has become a cancer that is eating into the live of the Church with the ordination of gay bishops and the recognition given to the group by various peoples and
governments. It is in this light that the paper delved into the response of the African people on the issue claiming that homosexuality is un-African and it is culturally unacceptable. The paper posited that homosexuality is unethical and unnatural. Therefore, it should be condemned in strong terms.

I WROTE TO ACADEMIA – They took down the article, noting that their SCHOLARLY site is zero tolerance for hate and misInformation:

2. PASTOR J.T. OLORUNMOJO

BUT TODAY – 10/08, I found another such hateful article. This one on this academic site, but uploaded and written by an African Pastor. Again I plan to complain – however given his credential it will be interesting to see if ACADEMIA.EDU takes it down. It seems they need to do a better job of policing content – because too much hate is popping up – and I am having to draw their attention to it:

CHRISTIANITY AND HOMOSEXUALITY IN AFRICA

BY PASTOR J.T. OLORUNMOJO

1.0 ABSTRACT

Going by events in the world today, one can say that homosexuality has come to stay. The speed at which the act, at the moment, is being recognized around some parts of the world attests to that. Some cities and countries around the world are making or have made laws to recognize such as human right for those who practice it. So, this paper examines the position of African Christians to homosexuality in relation to biblical view.

This work adopts historical method to approach the topic. The history of homosexuality is examined from biblical and sociological points of view. It is discovered that biblically and in Africa, homosexuality remains one of the horrible acts in morality that any persons can commit. Biblically and in Africa homosexuality is not natural. It is seen as a perversion. Africans would struggle to make sense of why two women or men would engage in sexual relationship with each other. To most Africans, the act is nothing but a pointer to the truth that the world had indeed turned upside down, a reflection of the moral decay that has beset the world.

My Complaint – This is one of several articles I have had the misfortune to see on Academia.edu that asserts hateful homophobic and false information . CHRISTIANITY AND HOMOSEXUALITY IN AFRICA, BY PASTOR J.T. OLORUNMOJO – A lecturer at the Apostolic Church Theological Seminary Ayegbaju, Ilesa, Osun State. His assertions should remain in his church and religious realms but not on an academic site . As a country conditions expert for asylum seekers from his country it is this type of hate that causes extreme violence against LGBTQI+ people.
