On June 03, 2009, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on Uniting American Families Act (UAFA) and for the first time the question of Equality in our Immigration Law will flare in the face of this Country and the World.
This is a giant step forward for the entire LGBT community in the USA and all over the World. Even though you may not be affected at this time, we are all a heartbeat away from falling in love with someone from a foreign country and here in the USA right now, as it stands if you fall in love with a non citizen or non- legal resident, you will be compelled at some point to choose between your lover or your land.
If faced with this you will stand to lose your career, your home, your source of income, proximity to your local family, your car, possessions, pets, if you need to leave the USA. Even if your State allows you to marry, it will not help with this critical federal right.
As a community, we have always stuck together through all our trials and tribulations. When HIV /AIDS first hit the gay men community, the lesbians showed up in force and became the loving caregivers to our brothers. This is the very moment ALL gay and lesbian people must, and hopefully many straight people will, come out and express support for the passage of UAFA and comprehensive immigration reform that includes our gay and lesbian community. I am asking every one out there to do something to bring attention to UAFA in a positive way. There is an extraordinary synchronicity taking place – right now – we have a democratic majority in House and Senate and on Judiciary Committee; We have visibility from the case of Shirley Tan; We have a Mayor in San Angelo, Texas who has had to give up his fourth term when choosing between his career or his partner; we have a cases right now where good people are in detention; we have a President Obama who has made us promises; We have the World watching as we hypocritically pronounce upon the human rights of their nations and fail our own. Now we need you; its time to activate and have your voices heard.

I am currently living in Canada with my partner. To be together we had to move here and leave my home, my family, along with one adult daughter who has blessed me with two beautiful grand children. A grandson I’ve met once (he’s 19 months old) and a brand new grand daughter that I wont be able to see until next year. No one can imagine the heart break we feel (unless they have gone through this) of leaving your home, your family and your country behind simply because the “Land of the Free” wont accept us.
